Challenge:
Design a logo for the 2024 St. Andrew church Summer Camp
Client:
St. Andrew Lutheran Church

A few quick sketches of various ideas, all way too detailed for what they wanted.

I and several others were approached for this project by my professor, who asked us to make a logo design for the 2024 summer camp t-shirt that followed the daily themes of feed, heal, forgive, pray, and rest. I've never been a particularly religious person, but I'm always looking for new projects and experience, and I thought this would be a fun challenge, so I started sketching.
I knew I wanted to have some kind of tree motif as the main visual component, as that's typically what comes to mind for me when I think about healing and rest, and it worked well as a symbol of growth at the same time. My biggest challenge, however, was figuring out how to incorporate the required text into the design smoothly, as I wanted to do something with the tree's roots, but it would quickly become unreadable with my usual detail-forward sketching.

After several attempts, I decided to keep things simple, and went with a blocky silhouette for the tree, with its roots forming a heart, like it was growing out of it. I wanted some kind of script or hand-written font for the main theme, but upon receiving feedback, I changed the style to a simpler hand-written font in an effort to make it more readable. I also thickened up the bottom of the heart root to make it stand out more, and submitted it to the client for review.

Throughout all of this process, I should mention that I was on summer break from classes, and didn't have all of my usual tools at my disposal. I did these logos on Ibis Paint on my tablet, and while it's a good drawing program, it doesn't have the same vector capabilities as Adobe Illustrator, or the same photo mockup support like Photoshop.
That being said, I do like how these turned out, and while St. Andrew chose to go with a different person's work in the end, I still got experience in problem solving and tight deadlines.
